Process Development Guidance
I've been fortunate to have played a role in contributing to or leading Process Development solutions for more than 3 decades!
I worked for 15 years as a Process Engineer and Scientist in BioPharma for Johnson & Johnson and Chiron. There I learned from great leaders about how to develop & transfer technology. We utilized E. coli, Pichia, Corynebacteria, and CHO culture to make the different compounds of interest, and we used centrifugation, homogenization and different formats of filtration to recover the product from the biomass. And I learned an amazing approach to technology transfer (which I discuss elsewhere).
Next I moved to Amyris, where for more that 18 years and I contributed to or led process development teams which developed amazing technology for dozens of kg-scale purified samples for testing and applications development, and well as developing and transferring 15 different products to commercial scale.
I very much enjoy thinking about the process of process development: how can it be done faster & more efficiently, how can we best benefit from what AI is good at and move away from patterns that slow us down. Hopefully something in these essays resonates with you.
